ROCK SPRINGS — Scout BSA Riley Newberg received his Eagle Scout Award at a special Court of Honor on Nov. 8 at Western Wyoming Community College. He also received a Bronze Palm for earning five merit badges beyond the 21 required.
To earn the rank of Eagle, Newberg mastered basic Scout skills such as first aid and knot tying, earned 21 merit badges, served in leadership positions, and led others in a community service project.
Newberg participated in the Cub Scout program in Packs 55 and 4. He earned his Arrow of Light and bridged into Troop 4, where he went on numerous camping trips, participated in service projects and went to Boy Scout National Jamboree. In 2019 he joined Troop 55, where he completed the merit badges he had left. His Eagle Scout project was fencing trees along the river to protect them from cows and other animals. He also completed his needed paperwork and Board of Review.
Eagle Scout Jimmy Knudsen served as master of ceremonies for Newberg’s Eagle Court of Honor, which began with an invocation by Eagle Scout J.T. Larsen and the Pledge of Allegiance. The program included three speakers.
Kaden Hilton told of his first year at Scout camp and how homesick he was. Newberg sensed his anxiety, asked if he’d like to talk about it and helped him through the experience. Hilton said that is the kind of a person Newberg is, according to a press release.
Bill Ruoff spoke of how, as a boy, he was invited to Scouts by a new friend. He said that Scout passed on the adventure of Scouting to him, and he encouraged Newberg to pass it on to others.
Riley Newberg’s father, Chuck Newberg, invited Eagle Scouts in the audience to repeat the Scout Law. He said his son lives by the Law and shared examples of Riley being helpful and reverent.
Troop 55 Scoutmaster Andy Pugmire, read the Eagle Charge, which encourages an Eagle to live the ideals of Scouting for the rest of his life.
Jimmy Knudsen pinned the Eagle Badge and a Bronze Palm on Newberg, after which Newberg presented Eagle mom and dad pins to his parents, Stacie and Chuck Newberg. Newberg presented Eagle mentor pins to his Cub Scout den leader, Jaelynn Knudsen, and to Troop 4 Assistant Scoutmaster, Birch Smith.
Troop 4 Scoutmaster Kevin Maloney gave the Scoutmaster’s Minute. He told the story of a king who promised riches to the person who traveled the road the best. The winner was a man who stopped to clear a pile of rocks off the road so others following him could have a better journey.
The benediction was given by Eagle Scout Adam Larsen, and refreshments were served.
