SPARKING A RECORD

GILLETTE — Volunteers use a welding torch to light some of the 2,000 sparklers handed out in downtown Gillette on Saturday as residents gathered to welcome members of the Pyrotechnics Guild International for their convention. The city tried to set a record for the number of sparklers lit at one time for the event. The record is set at 1,713 and organizers hope Saturday’s event saw 2,000 sparklers lit at once. The decision on whether the record was broken is now in the hands of the publishers of the Guinness Book of World Records.
