ROCK SPRINGS — The Rock Springs Avengers 15U boys gold team competed at the 2019 Wyoming Cup state soccer tournament on Memorial Day weekend. The Avengers came into state tournament flying high, coming off a second-place finish at the GMIT Border Battle in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The first game of the state cup saw the Avengers take on tournament favorites Sheridan Storm. The Avengers controlled the game but they came up in a hard-fought battle, 3-2.

In Game 2, the Avengers took on a strong Heart Mountain team. Getting back to their winning ways, the Avengers won 4-0.

Game 3 pitted the Avengers against a fast, physical Lander Strikers team. The Avengers needed another strong performance to ensure a spot in the championship game. The Avengers started slow, but by the start of the second half they were once again playing strong. Rock Springs finished off Lander with another 4-0 victory, setting up a rematch with Sheridan in the state championship.

In Monday’s state championship, the Avengers once again faced off against a larger, more physical Sheridan team. From the opening kickoff, the Avengers took the fight to Sheridan. The Avengers were relentless in their play. Rock Springs never let Sheridan possess the ball or gain any rhythm. When the final whistle blew, the Avengers were champions, defeating Sheridan 3-1 and bringing home the state title.

The team this season was a mix of 13U, 14U and 15U playing in the 15U gold division bracket. The boys played for each other, protected each other and fought for each other… this team is a Brotherhood!!

Players this season included Korbin Arnell, Filiberto Benitez-Moreno, Braxton Cordova, Karson Curtis, Jesus Duarte, AJ Fletcher, Cesar Flores, William Hamilton, Adan Hernandez, Brandon Hernandez, Jeff Hyatt, Hunter Jenkins, Dante Moreno, Azra Moses, Connor Panzer, Joshua Sosa, and Dalton Thomas.

Team staff included head coach Dustin Moses, assistant coaches Mike Jenkins and Daniel Moreno, goalkeeper trainer McKayla Bernatis and team manager Christi Jenkins.
