Tina Waked finished the season in Casper with a state title for the Rock Springs gymnastics team. She competed in the 12–14-year-old division, finished first overall with a 33.9 all-around score.
Rock Springs boxer Danny Trujillo retained his Rocky Mountain Golden Gloves middle-weight title at the coliseum in Salt Lake City, pounding Coloradoan Gene Lamorie in the championship bout.
Tami Browning and Shawn Taylor, members of the Rock Springs High School Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), represented the school in national contests as state winners. Browning was first in selection and presentation and third in job interviews competition. Taylor qualified with a second placing in general merchandising on the master employee level.
Amanda Rosenberg was selected as the 1984 Young Career Woman by the Sweetwater County Business and Professional Women at the Outlaw Inn. The Young Career Woman program was designed to honor young women who have made outstanding contributions to their careers and communities.
Vern Stanton, a Rock Springs hunter, spent eight days hunting in Namibia and earned eight trophies to show his effort.
Jason Aldred took first place in his division as he led the Rock Springs Swim Club to a second-place finish at the 8th annual Pentathlon in Rawlins.
Upright handicapped parking signs were installed at the Plaza Mall and White Mountain Mall. The decision to consider the signs was revealed at a meeting of the Mayor’s Committee for the Handicapped.
Installation of the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce sign was completed for the new facility on Dewar Drive in Rock Springs.
Paula Wonnacott, a University of Wyoming senior from Rock Springs, was awarded the Mark of Excellence in regional competition sponsored by the Society of Professional Journalists — Sigma Delta Chi.
Coach Sheila Syvrud received the Western 4-A Coach of the Year honors.
Movies playing at the local theater included “Children of the Corn,” “Against All Odds,” “Romancing the Stone,” with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner and “Splash,” starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah.
