RAWLINS — After a string of doubleheaders against only a few teams to start their schedule, the Rawlins Generals American Legion baseball team hits the road this weekend for their first tournament action this season.
Last weekend, despite failing to record their first win of the season, the Generals were able to put quite a few points on the board against Laramie in their 14-8 loss in the second half of their doubleheader on Sunday.
“We had one run in that first game against Laramie then turned around and put up eight against that same team and (we) played a lot better,” Rawlins head coach David Greninger said. “The kids just played relaxed and had fun.”
The Generals actually won the second game when it came down to earned runs, but like they have seen all season, their nine errors in the game eventually did them in.
Greninger said that error problem is something they need to fix heading into this weekend’s matchups.
“The whole year that is what’s hurt us, injuries and errors have been plaguing us all year long,” he said. “It isn’t an excuse, that is stuff we have to fix and battle through and we will just continue to keep battling.”
In the first nine games of the season, Rawlins has actually only played against three different teams — Riverton, Laramie and Green River.
Greninger said this weekend’s matchups, starting with a doubleheader in Glenrock on Friday before heading to the Douglas Tournament Saturday, should feature some favorable matchups for his squad.
“I think this whole weekend will be good for us,” he said. “We have Glenrock and I think we match up well against them, then we have Rock Springs that second game and I like that matchup. Our prep team has played their prep team a couple times and we beat them the whole time, so I am looking forward to that matchup as well.
“We also have a game against Green River, who we haven’t beaten yet, but we are looking forward to that one as well.”
When it comes down to it, Greninger said his team has the talent to win against anyone, they just need to calm down in the midst of action and play to their ability.
“I just want to see them relax and the dugout needs to be alive,” he said. “We just have to play loose and have fun, we are a much better team when we do that.”
