March 2004:
The Rock Springs Tigers Wrestling team finished in 7th place at the state tournament in Casper with seven top six placers, two appearances in the championship bout, one state champion and one outstanding wrestler of the tournament. Receiving top honors as the “4-A Outstanding Wrestler” was Rafael Chavez.
The first shipment of cement cells arrived Tuesday, enabling the crews to get six of the cells set in place at the new Sweetwater County Detention Center site.
Liesel Shineberg of Rock Springs read a short story and a personal essay she wrote at Western Wyoming Community College. Since taking Professor of English Barbara Smith’s Creative Writing class, Scheinberg’s essays have been published in several “Heartwarmers” collections.
Affordable, available housing was getting more and more difficult to find in Rock Springs and Green River. There were approximately six new subdivisions under construction and two new hotels planned to be built in the area.
As the indoor track season ended, the Rock Springs squad couldn’t be happier with their performance. The boys took the indoor state championship while the girls placed fourth in their final meet of the season.
The Rock Springs Police Department chose Lynn Orester as civilian employee for the fourth quarter. Orester had been employed in the records division of the RSPD for 15 years.
Devon Huschka addressed this rock spring city council about going to China as a goodwill ambassador for the United States.
Sgt. Ben Dawson who served aboard the USS Peleliu, and more than 2,200 other marines and sailors were reunited with friends and family members at Camp Pendleton, California. The members of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit returned home after nearly seven months in the Persian Gulf.
Rock Springs High School students participating in Girls State were Casey Ebert, Christine Adams. Alicia Grove Gabriela Capelli, Kelly Moore, Megan Snowberger, Amanda Rawson, and Jessica Weiss.
Bethany Yarrow and Chris Kennedy performed at the Wyoming Women’s Fair at Western Wyoming Community College. Yarrow was a New York City singer/songwriter and documentary filmmaker. Kennedy, a Rock Springs singer/songwriter, was the associate professor of communication at Western.
Lori Copelan of Rock Springs portrayed L ‘Enfant as the lead singer in the French opera “L ‘Enfant et les Sortiledge,” presented by Utah State University in Logan.
Dr. Banu Symington, a local internist, became board certified in medical oncology — cancer care in 2004.
In the progress report, the Pilot Butte District of Boy Scouts of America reported that they had a good participation rate in 2003. There were 875 boys involved in the program. The district included Pinedale, Farson, Rock Springs, Green River, Manila and McKinnon.
Ann Carouthers of Workforce Services was presented with a certificate for 25 years of service to the agency.
Movie playing at local theaters include “Passion of the Christ,” “50 First Dates,” with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore and “Butterfly Effect,” with Ashton Kutchner.
Popular songs on the radio were “Toxic,” by Britney Spears, “My Immortal,” by Evanescence, and “Numb,” by Linkin Park.
