The increase in the minimum wage was the first since 1968. It went up to $2.30 an hour for some 56 million workers.
The Newcomers Club of Rock Springs has taken one of the projects that the City Beautification Committee proposed. The club planned to build eliminated maps on billboards to be set at two city entrances.
Jim Smith, Chad Erickson and Bill Banks joined the city planning department.
For the Rock Springs Student Council, President Reid West was elected with 126 votes. For vice president, it was Tim Kershisnik having 170 votes.
Tricia Freeman was accepted to work in the federally sponsored U.S Youth Conservation Corps.
Dean Shauers, a senior at Rock Springs High School, was awarded a wrestling scholarship at Mesa College, Grand Junction Colorado.
John Wataha, valedictorian of the graduating class at Rock Springs High School was given the annual award of the Readers Digest Association for students who, by their successful schoolwork, give promise of attaining leadership in the community.
A Green River man trapped for nearly 24 hours in the cave-in of a new mine shaft at the Allied Chemical Company plant west of Green River was reported in good condition. Joe Beaucamp, 28, was suffering mostly from cold exposure and dehydration after his 23 1/2 ordeal.
Tracy Joe Hayden, 12, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hayden of Reliance, won first in baton solo competition and first in two baton competition in Cheyenne. Tracy competed against youngsters 11 to 14 years old.
Phyllis Rees, 19, was hired by Allied Chemical as its first female underground employee.
Mrs. Pat H Burns, society editor of the Rock Springs Rocket, Miner and Mrs. Richard Winkler of the KVRS news staff. were presented gifts by Mattie Nelson, publicity chairman for Does Drove 59.
“M-A-S-H,” the irreverent view of life among medics in the Korean War was named best comedy series of the 1973-74 television season at the 26th Annual Emmy Awards.
