ROCK SPRINGS – The Food Bank of Sweetwater County recently received a grant from United Way of Southwest Wyoming to help fund operational expenses of the emergency food program.
The $40,000 grant is awarded for the food bank’s 2023-2024 fiscal year and will provide emergency food to the low-income community in Sweetwater County.
According to the food bank’s press release, the emergency food program aligns with the United Way of Southwest Wyoming’s Basic Needs initiative to provide quality services to support independent living for individuals and families. Food bank clients will receive nutritious food to last for 3-5 days twice per month.
“We are fortunate to have the support of United Way of Southwest Wyoming to be able to continue the emergency food program during this time of need within our community,” stated Kathy Siler, executive director of the Food Bank of Sweetwater County.
The Food Bank of Sweetwater County has four different distributions days per month at two different locations.
The distribution days at the Green River Food Pantry, located at 550 Uinta Drive Suite F in Green River, are on the first and third Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. and serves the residents for Green River, Granger, Little America and McKinnon.
The distribution days at the Rock Springs Food Bank, located at 90 Center St. in Rock Springs, are the second and fourth Thursday of each month from 10 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. and 4-5:45 p.m. and serves the residents of Rock Springs, Farson, Eden, Reliance and Highway 430 South.
How to donate
The Food Bank of Sweetwater County accepts donations on those distribution days. According to the food bank’s website, the best time to drop off in Green River is from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and the best time to drop off in Rock Springs is from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. or 4-5 p.m.
Donations that can be accepted are perishable foods, such as professionally-packaged meat and dairies, refrigerated and freezer food items; non-perishable foods, like canned foods, dry packaged food items; baby food and diapers; children’s books; and personal items, like shampoo, toothpaste, soap, etc.
Non-perishable donations are accepted at the public libraries in Rock Springs and Green River during the regular library hours.
Monetary donations can be made during business hours at either location, or a check can be mailed to the office in Rock Springs with a memo or note attached to it that declares which town the donation will be applied to.
